I bought this for my niece and nephew, who are are both under the age of 2. The Scarab is a fast bug. Just turn it on, and let it go! It bounces off obstacles, and will even right itself if it gets flipped over. The kids like to let it go, chase it, catch it, then let it go again! Great fun!Three notes: first, the obligatory safety note — this product is rated for children 8+, so keep an eye on the younger ones.Secondly, I wish the batteries would last longer. I would have given this product 5 stars if battery life were better. Further, Hexbug branded batteries are expensive, so I’d recommend buying them from another source. The Scarab (and at least some of the other Hexbugs) take button type AG13/LR44 batteries. You can buy a pack of 10 on Amazon for $2.16 as of this writingΒ MAXELL LR44 (AG13) BATTERIES 10 pcs .Lastly, of the other Hexbugs, I recommend the LarvaΒ Hexbug Larva (Colors May Vary) Β which has an infrared sensor in it’s head that it uses to detect obstacles in it’s path. Once something is detected (e.g. you hand in front of the sensor), it’ll pivot and move in another direction. Good stuff. The fastest Hexbug, the AntΒ Hexbug Ant (Colors May Vary) , is also fun, but doesn’t work well on carpet. It also has a reputation of getting it’s wheels jammed by pet hair.

I bought the Scarab for my two cats and I was very surprised when I received as the “bug” was so much larger than I thought it would be. I received a light green one, which is great as it shows up well on the tan tile in my entry area and in my kitchen. I placed the Scarab on the tile floor in the entry area as there is more room there and my cats immediately were interested, they weren’t afraid at all. Both cats stared at the Scarab for a bit, then batted it around and chased it. The Scarab fell over on its back but flipped right back over and off it went again. Even when the bug bumped up against the console legs it eventually moved around them and kept going. The movement is exactly like a crab would move, very creepy indeed. I recommend placing only on hardwood floors or tile. On carpet, the Scarab slows way down and I am sure will use up the batteries even more quickly. I highly recommend this hexbug for cats. Most cat toys are a waste of money, but not this! The only issue is that I have gone through 6 batteries today. At this rate I will have to buy batteries by the hundreds several times each month. I ordered more batteries already and a nano! I guess limiting play time for my boys is in order. They cry though, when I take the Scarab away from them. Always supervise play time as the legs are plastic and could be bitten off and swallowed. This is a very sturdy toy and alot of fun. I am hooked on Hexbugs now!

The media could not be loaded. I bought this guy for my cat to play with, or to satiate my curiosity, I’m not sure which was the bigger motive. I had the Hexbug zombie larva already and I really like how it avoids walls and objects. The cat is of course fascinated with both of these toys. They are both pretty different. This one has no avoidance sensors but it has the ability to flip itself over if it gets caught on its back. I really wish he did have the avoidance sensors though, as he is constantly getting stuck against a wall or wedged under low furniture. Thankfully my cat remedies this by batting him or pulling one of his legs with his teeth to dislodge the scarab from its seemingly favorite activity of banging its head repeatedly against the wall. My kitty actually dug into the basket and tried to play with scarab Hexbug by himself after I turned it off so I’d say this toy is a success. I took off one star because I think this toy should have some sort of ability to move itself away from the wall instead of getting stuck. If they combined the larva’s avoidance sensor with this guy’s faster speed and ability to flip it would be perfect for my needs.**my cat provided a demonstration of the Hexbug Scarab for your purchasing consideration**

My cat (a big 17.5 lb Siamese) loves it – even when it’s off. I’m going to be getting another one which I hope will be a bright color because the grey/clear one is really hard to see when I’m trying to find it after he knocks it under anything where he can’t get at it. It took several days before I found it the last time stuck in a bunch of cables behind the entertainment center.I did have a problem with the first one I ordered – even with new batteries it would only go a few inches before stopping. Amazon quickly replaced it. The new one works great, but it also developed a problem which I was able to correct. One of the spring contacts (nearest the head) would get pushed down through the bottom of the battery chamber and get stuck so it would no longer make contact. After teasing it back into position several times I inserted a small piece of paper in the chamber to prevent the contact from getting stuck again – see photos.

I Love this hex bug, exactly as described. I bought this and many other Lexbugs (spider, mini, scorpian) and unfortunately, my cat is not amused by these awesome bugs. It Does work on carpet. Great product just sucks my cat is bored with pretty much anything thats not “Dabird” my cat has every motion cat toy known to man, so he gets bored quickly. I think this is great for most cats, but not mine.

As far as I know there is no remote control, it goes on its own which is part of the fun. When it hits something it changes direction. It moves like it is alive. My 8 year old grandson enjoys it! Very entertaining!

There is no β robotic intelligenceβ here just a battery operated walking toy. Not very good at righting itself when upside down despite claims of that ability. It simply runs into walls and relentlessly continues to move its legs going nowhere. Worth maybe $5.00 at best. Mildly amusing sort of similar to wind up walking dentures.

Our 7 year old and 4 year old had a lot of fun with the bugs. They put them on a tub lid and watched who could get knocked off first. Reasonable price, too.
